Conan Mak
Material-focused photographer based in Tokyo.
I work with ceramic artists, craft studios and design brands to create images that communicate material, form and presence.
Rather than simply documenting an object, my goal is to reveal what makes each piece unique through light, shadow and careful observation.
東京を拠点に活動する、素材表現に特化したフォトグラファー。
陶芸家、工芸作家、デザインブランドのために、素材の質感、造形、そして作品が持つ存在感を伝える写真を制作しています。
単に作品を記録するのではなく、一つひとつの作品が持つ個性を、光と影、そして丁寧な観察を通して引き出すことを大切にしています。
Why Ceramics?
陶芸を選んだ理由
I didn’t choose ceramics because it was a niche.
I chose it because no other subject challenged me in the same way.
Ceramics constantly change under light.
A matte surface behaves differently from a glossy glaze.
Every curve, texture and reflection requires a different approach.
That complexity is exactly what keeps me curious.
Each piece deserves photographs that respect the maker’s work rather than simply record it.
陶芸を選んだ理由は、ニッチな分野だったからではありません。
これほどまでに光と向き合うことを求められる被写体は、他にないと感じたからです。
陶芸作品は、光によって表情が大きく変わります。
マットな質感と艶のある釉薬では、光の反応はまったく異なります。
わずかな曲線や質感、反射の違いによっても、最適なライティングは変わります。
その複雑さこそが、私を惹きつけ続ける理由です。
一つひとつの作品には、ただ記録するだけではなく、作り手の想いや美しさまで伝える写真がふさわしいと考えています。
How I Work
撮影へのアプローチ
Every project begins with understanding the object itself.
Before placing a light, I study the material, the surface, the proportions and the intention behind the work.
Lighting is never applied as a preset.
It is built specifically for each piece to reveal its character as clearly as possible.
Because of this approach, every photograph is created with purpose rather than routine.
すべての撮影は、まず作品そのものを理解することから始まります。
ライティングを組む前に、素材、質感、フォルム、そして作品に込められた意図を丁寧に観察します。
決まったライティングを当てはめることはありません。
一つひとつの作品が持つ個性を最も自然に引き出せるよう、その作品のためだけに光を組み立てます。
だからこそ、すべての写真は単なる作業の積み重ねではなく、明確な意図を持って制作されています。
What I Believe
写真に対する考え方
Photography is not decoration.
It is presentation.
The way a piece is photographed influences how people perceive its quality, craftsmanship and value.
Strong work deserves images that communicate the same level of care as the object itself.
写真は、装飾ではありません。
作品を伝えるための「表現」です。
作品がどのように撮影されるかによって、人々が受け取る品質や技術、そして価値の印象は大きく変わります。
優れた作品には、その作品に込められた想いと同じだけの丁寧さで向き合った写真がふさわしいと考えています。
Beyond Photography
写真、その先へ
Good photographs support more than a website.
They become part of exhibitions, catalogues, online stores, publications and long-term brand identity.
My role is to create images that continue working long after the camera is put away.
優れた写真は、ウェブサイトのためだけに存在するものではありません。
展示会、カタログ、オンラインストア、出版物など、さまざまな場面で活用され、ブランドの価値を長く支える存在になります。
私の役割は、シャッターを切ったその瞬間で終わる写真ではなく、その先も作品とブランドのために価値を生み続ける写真をつくることです。
